Vernal Pool Plunge – Walk

May 3, 2023

Date/Time
Date(s) - May 3rd, 2023
4:00 pm - 5:30 pm

Two people stand in at the edge of a vernal pool in a leaf covered forest in early spring. One of them holds various jars in their hands with samples collected from the pool, looking back and smiling at the other person. Three more people in the background are visible on the far edge of the pool.
Plunge participants Willa and Meredyth explore a vernal pool.

Discover the ephemeral wonder of vernal pools with Hilltown Land Trust and naturalist Nellie Wilson! Join us for a walk in the woods where we’ll explore the rich biodiversity within vernal pools. From fairy shrimp to salamanders, these temporary habitats offer a unique and necessary ecosystem for some of our region’s most interesting species. This walk and talk will cover vernal pool basics and allow you to get up close and personal with some of the life in the pool as Nellie describes the fascinating ecology of these microhabitats.

This walk is part 2 of this years Vernal Pool Plunge. If you’re interested in attending the webinar the night before, see details here. You can attend either or both events, you are not required to attend both. If you plan to attend both events, you must register for each separately!

All ages are welcome to join this event! Due to the sensitive ecological nature of this event, we ask that you leave non-service dogs at home.

Location

The VPP will be held on private land in Plainfield on Rt 116, roughly 2 miles west of the Plainfield Town Hall. Details and directions provided upon registration.

Access Info

We will be hiking on gentle terrain on an old road. The ground is at times uneven, but overall is grass-covered with gentle ups and downs. We will be walking for less than 1/2 a mile, roughly 5 to 10 minutes, but will be on our feet for the duration of the event.

Bathroom: There will be no restrooms available at the event location.

Public transportation: Public transit is not available to the property. Contact Tim if you are interested in trying to coordinate a carpool.
