Fairy Shrimp!

April 8, 2020

Welcome to #WildlifeWednesday! Hilltown Land Trust plans to post weekly every Wednesday on our social media about the beauty of the natural world. Visit our Facebook page to subscribe and get regular doses of fun nature facts, videos, photos, and more!

This week we are excited to feature our friend the fairy shrimp! This one-inch long relative of the lobster and crab is getting ready to hatch its eggs. This usually begins at the start of spring when dry vernal pool depressions fill with water are now mating to produce the next generation.

Fun Facts! The eggs can stay dormant on dry land for 10 years waiting for water to pool so they can hatch! Pretty cool.

Our TerraCorps member Tessa captured this video on a visit to a vernal pool during a hike this past weekend.
