10 Ways to Celebrate Earth Day This Year

April 21, 2020

Homo sapiens have been on this planet for at least 200,000 years. Our relationship with the earth and its other inhabitants has adapted and changed over that time and continues to change.
This April 22nd marks the 50th anniversary of the first Earth Day. We can take this time to reflect on our connection to the planet that is our home.
While we can’t safely participate in many of our usual Earth Day celebrations this year, Hilltown Land Trust has put together a list of 10 activities that you can do responsibly to celebrate what an amazing place we live in.
  1. Hike or bike to a favorite spot and take a picture to share with your friends and family.
  2. Observe something in nature, then draw or write about what you saw.
  3. Plant native species or remove invasive species in your yard.
  4. Pick up trash in your neighborhood. Be sure to wear gloves and wash your hands!
  5. Call your government representatives and ask them to support environmental causes that you care about.
  6. Watch an environmental documentary or listen to an environmental justice podcast.
  7. Commit to doing something NEW this year to help sustain our planet (ex. composting food, drying clothes on racks or outside, plan a stream clean-up event).
  8. Donate to an environmental organization or ask about volunteer opportunities.
  9. Learn more about the natural world around you and the history of the landscape. For ideas, check out HLT’s suggested reading list.
  10. Celebrate with Hilltown Land Trust online today at 3 pm!
