Hilltown Land Trust Presents a Free Midsummer Fern Foray Hike, Sunday August 2, 2015, 12 to 2 pm at a Taproot Commons Farm in Cummington

Woodsiaceae--Lady Fern Family
Woodsiaceae–Lady Fern Family

Midsummer in the hilltowns, after the spring wildflowers have passed and before the late summer ones begin, is the perfect time to turn our appreciation to the masses of lush green fern vegetation that cover our forest floors, ring our wetlands, and line our trails. Join us for a “fern foray” hike at Taproot Commons Farm in Cummington, a private land held under Conservation Restriction with Hilltown Land Trust and DCR. We will explore the diversity of common forest and wetland ferns by examining easy-to-observe differences in plant form and habitat. Come prepared for a 2 mile roundtrip hike along moderate terrain. Long sleeves/pants, sturdy shoes, bug protection, and water are strongly recommended. Also bring a magnifying lens and fern book if you have them, but they are not required. Please contact Jennifer Garrett at jgarrett@ttor.org or 508-887-0496 to register and receive detailed directions and event updates. This event is FREE and open to the public. Rain will cancel the event.

Directions:

Please register to receive detailed directions and event updates. Taproot Commons Farm is on Porter Hill Road, just past the intersection with Fairgrounds Road at the Cummington Fairgrounds. From Route 9 in Cummington, take Fairgrounds Road and follow it to the Cummington Fairgrounds. Take a right onto Porter Hill Road. The farm is the first driveway on your left.
