Girls Who Looked Under Rocks

April 11, 2015

Date/Time
Date(s) - Apr 11th, 2015
11:00 am - 12:30 pm

Location
Meekins Library

Girls Who Looked Under RocksMeet the author Jeannine Atkins and get a behind-the-scenes peak at how she uncovers stories about real people for her nonfiction books. Jeannine will read from her book Girls Who Looked Under Rocks: The Lives of Six Pioneering Naturalists at Williamsburg’s Meekins Library in the Hawks-Hayden Community Room. Following the talk, there will be a guided exploratory hike up Petticoat Hill, where you will have the opportunity to uncover pieces of the natural world—perhaps it will be waiting for you under a rock. This event will be geared towards elementary and middle school aged children.

Free & Open to the Public

“I wrote Girls Who Looked Under Rocks to bring more attention to women who pushed past discouragement and used their curiosity and passionate intelligence to break into work studying and caring for fields, forests, and the creatures who make these their homes. I hope the naturalists who put animals — from bumble bees to chimpanzees — at the center of their lives will inspire girls to follow their lead as scientists, explorers, and conservationists.”
— Jeannine Atkins

Directions & Parking:
The workshop starts indoors at the Meekins Library, 2 Williams Street (Rt. 9), Williamsburg, MA. We will then walk as a group to Petticoat Hill for the exploratory hike. From the Meekins Library parking lot, turn left onto Rt. 9, take your first right onto Petticoat Hill Road. The trailhead is on the left. Accessible parking is available at the Meekins library, all others should park in the Anne T Dunphy School lot, a short walk across Main Street from the library at 1 Petticoat Hill Road, Williamsburg, MA, 01096
