HLT Reading Group – Farming While Black

July 29, 2021

Date/Time
Date(s) - Jul 29th, 2021
6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

This spring and summer, join Hilltown Land Trust staff and community members as we explore some newly released works as well as some old favorites in a casual, welcoming reading group. We will meet from 6:00-8:00 pm via Zoom on the final Thursday of each month during April through July. The selected books each address topics close to HLT’s core mission, and represent a range of genres including non-fiction nature writing, Indigenous history, and environmental justice. We are looking forward to discussions both entertaining and educational, and hope you’ll be able to join us! For more information, please contact barry@hilltownlandtrust.org

To sign up for our reading group, please complete the registration form at the bottom of this page.

Book cover of Farming While Black by Leah PennimanWeek Three: Farming While Black: Soul Fire Farm’s Practical Guide to Liberation on the Land by Leah Penniman

Join us on July 29th as we discuss Leah Penniman’s (Soul Fire Farm, 2019 James Beard Foundation Leadership Award) Farming While Black – a “comprehensive “how to” guide for aspiring African-heritage growers.” Part technical primer, part history, the book offers a counterpoint to a traditionally whitewashed story of agriculture.

“For centuries Black people have utilized farming for nourishment and sustenance. Although Black farming and the cultivation of Black land is rapidly endangered, Leah Penniman and her family, through their work with Soul Fire Farm, are holding down the tradition that has anchored Black communities for so long. Farming While Black helps us remember why land cultivation is such a significant part of the fight for freedom for Black people. Reading this book provides practical tools along with a beautiful visionary template for practicing land development that is rooted in healing and transformation. Thank you, Leah, for your work and for your vision.”—Patrisse Khan-Cullors, author of When They Call You a Terrorist; cofounder of Black Lives Matter

“An extraordinary book…part agricultural guide, part revolutionary manifesto”–VOGUE
