Work Day at the Stevens Property

October 8, 2021

Date/Time
Date(s) - Oct 8th, 2021
9:00 am - 12:30 pm

Location
Stevens Property

Join Audrey, HLT’s TerraCorps Land Stewardship Coordinator, Baystate Forestry Services’ Lincoln Fish, Engagement Committee member and event leader Cesi Marseglia and other volunteers for a fun morning at our Stevens Property in Huntington.

Man with hat and face mask on is in the forest of the Stevens Property in Huntington Massachusetts. He is holding a paint brush in one hand lifted above his head to paint a tree with blue paint. In the other hand he is holding an old yogurt cup filled with blue paint. He also has a paint scraper under his arm which was used to scrape the tree so the paint would go on easier. The tree is large and in the foreground with many smaller trees which appear blurrier in the background. The purpose of painting the tree is to make the prior blazes more visible for hikers.

Tasks for the work day:
1.) Install seedling tubes around oak saplings to prevent future overbrowsing from deer and moose

2.) Hanging signage and other blockage efforts at points of illegal ATV trespassing

3.) Trail maintenance: Reblazing trees where needed plus cut downed trees across trails to improve hiker experience and safety

Note we will hike 1+ mile of moderate to difficult trails to get to the section that needs maintenance. Then we will be going into the large patch cut with very uneven footing and exposure to the elements. We will be back to the parking area at 12:30 pm.

When necessary we will be utilizing different tools, some provided by HLT, including: a few hand saws, loppers, paint, and paint scrapers (please bring your own hand tools if you have them).

Large brown moose eating a bare branch. It's ers are perked up and it is staring almost directly into the camera. Some confider trees can be seen in the background.
