Volunteer

A group of four smiling college students pose behind a post in the ground, holding the post hole digger they used to make the hole. They are surrounded by forest.
UMass Amherst students learn stewardship skills on the trail.

From serving on our board of directors or a committee to tackling clerical duties, blazing a trail, or supporting an event, our volunteers are essential to achieving HLT’s mission of land conservation and stewardship. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer with Hilltown Land Trust, fill out the volunteer interest form below and we’ll be in touch.

Volunteer Roles

Board and Committee Members
Two warmly dressed volunteers smile and laugh with each other on a late fall day.
Volunteers share a moment at the Gorge après Gorge 5k.

Representing many different interests, experiences, and perspectives, our Board of Directors and committee members care deeply about conserving the region’s open space. Serving as a Board or Committee member is a great way to become deeply involved with the work of HLT.

The Board is responsible for the overall direction of HLT, and committee members serve in an advisory capacity to the staff and Board of Directors.

Event Support
Three warmly dressed volunteers hand out cookie medals to 5k race finishers.

Event support volunteers do everything from keeping a winter solstice hike together in the dark to posting event flyers around their towns, plus all the tasks in between and beyond that keep our programs running smoothly.

Land Monitor

Monitors perform annual site visits on conserved lands. A typical site visit involves speaking with the landowner, walking the property, and documenting the visit together with the Land Stewardship Coordinator.

Land Steward

Stewardship volunteers get their hands dirty assisting HLT with trail work. Trail maintenance and trail blazing are the most common activities, with occasional opportunities like bridge building or new trail construction.

Photographer volunteers capture scenes of our beautiful Hilltown places and the work we do there. This includes wildlife and landscape photography on conserved lands, as well as taking photographs at events and workdays hosted by the land trust.
