Local Conservation Network Success!

May 18, 2020

Two people in discussion, in front of a map

In our Fall/Winter newsletter, Sally wrote about Hilltown Land Trust’s upcoming workshops to facilitate local dialogue about conservation. Having not held events quite like this in the past, we weren’t sure how many people to expect. This winter, we held two public events: in Goshen and Shelburne Falls. Over 70 town leaders, landowners, foresters, students, […]

The Bears in Our Woods

May 15, 2020

Wildlife camera photo of mother bear and three cubs walking along the edge of a pond

By Andrew Madden, HLT Board Member The American Black Bear (Ursus americanus) is part of life in the Hilltowns. But it wasn’t always so. Volunteer Spotlight: Vernal Pool Plunge!

May 14, 2020

A group pf 17 volunteers stand around and inside a small wooded wetland called a Vernal Pool at Hilltown Land Trust's Vernal Pool Plunge event. All volunteers are dressed in rubber knee high rain boots, pants, and raincoats. Many other volunteers are holding long white extendable nets, clipboards and buckets. All these tools are used for the Vernal Pool Plunge training event. The volunteers are standing in front of a large trunk of a white pine tree with long branches and many other species of trees can be seen in the background of the photo including hemlock and maples.

In spring, as the snow melts and the warm rains fall, many a nook and cranny fills with water. What was once simply a dip in an upland forest may now be a shallow wetland; a vernal pool teaming with life. Vernal pools are easily overlooked as they dry out during the summer. But they […]

What Open Space Means Today

May 14, 2020

Sally, her husband, and two of her kids in front of a tree with pink blossoms on a recent hike

By Sally Loomis, HLT Executive Director Perhaps more than ever, I feel immense gratitude to live here in the Hilltowns. We have access to public trails that aren’t crowded, scenic views from the safety of our cars, and a community that cares about protecting these things. In every part of the world, every one of […]
