How Do Your People Call The Earth?

July 20, 2023

Date/Time
Date(s) - Jul 20th, 2023
4:00 pm - 5:30 pm

Location
Worthington Library

Photograph depicts JuPong Lin, holding a piece of paper, standing in the woods next to the pond and speaking.
JuPong reading her poem next to the pond at Conwell.

Led by Writing the Land poet JuPong Lin, this workshop integrates origami, walking meditation, community poetry and installation art. It opens with a mandala ceremony to honor the Earth in as many languages as the community brings. JuPong will teach the origami canoe fold, offer a guided meditation to attune to other-than-human beings and send folks outside for a 10-minute walking meditation—solo or together. The final movement will include the origami butterfly fold, a poetry prompt and a community poem. The poem and installation will be exhibited in the library for one month after the event.

Accessibility

  • Bathroom: A small, indoor, single-stall bathroom without wheelchair turnaround space. The bathroom is located on the first floor of the library, which is accessed by an outdoor wooden ramp with handrails. We’re exploring more accessible bathroom alternatives, and will update with more information once we have it!
  • Event Location: This event will take place under a tent on a grassy lawn outside the library. The lawn is separated from the road by a granite curb, that a vehicle could potentially drive over to drop off a participant for access to the event space.
  • Distance Traveled: This event features a 10-minute walking/moving meditation. The amount of distance you cover is up to you!
  • Parking: Unmarked parking spots in a compacted dirt parking lot.
  • Public transportation: Public transit is not available to the Worthington Library. Contact us if you are interested in coordinating a carpool.
  • Seating: Seating options include armless cushioned chairs and unpadded metal folding chairs.

To be respectful of those with allergies and environmental sensitivities, we ask that you please refrain from wearing strong fragrances.

We’re happy to discuss your access needs for this event! For questions and accommodation requests, please reach out to sarah@hilltownlandtrust.org or call (413) 628-4485 ext. 6.
