Phenology/Seasonal Changes Series – December

December 11, 2021

Date/Time
Date(s) - Dec 11th, 2021
11:00 am - 12:30 pm

What happens in a landscape as the temperature, weather, and light change over the course of a season? This fall, join Hilltown Land Trust and naturalist Cesi Marseglia for a four-part program exploring seasonal changes in animal life, plants, climatic events and much more at the William Cullen Bryant Homestead in Cummington.

A series of four photographs in a grid depicting sugar maple leaves and trees over the course of four seasons. The first image is a close up of green sugar maple leaves on a branch, the second is a close up of a sugar maple leaf that has turned red and orange, the third is a tree without leaves in a snow-covered field, and the fourth is a branch with flower buds.We will be concerning ourselves with phenology: the cyclic, seasonal events that occur in a natural place over time. From the first bird and butterfly migrations to the coloring of fall leaves, and from the first frost to the beginning of hibernation, we will be journeying together and documenting the seasonal changes and phenological events that we observe, as well as a few we can’t see. We will also learn about the effects climate change has on these delicate processes.

Because this program is meant to demonstrate and document change over time, we encourage you to attend as many programs in this series as you are able. We also encourage you to bring a pen and a journal, a camera, and any other means of documenting what you see that will make this a memorable experience!

During this program, we will be walking less than a half mile altogether. We’ll be sticking together, and moving as slowly as the slowest person in the group. We’ll be walking on level terrain, and over curated dirt trails with the potential for occasional roots and ruts. This program is about being still and observing, not rushing, and is suitable for both adults and children. Unfortunately the terrain is not wheelchair accessible.

Cost: $5 for members of Hilltown Land Trust or The Trustees / $10 for non-members*.

*To become a member of Hilltown Land Trust for the year, make a gift in any amount to support our efforts to conserve and care for ecologically valuable land in the Hilltowns.

This program will take place on the second Saturday of each month, September through December, from 11:00am to 12:30pm. Advance registration is required for each session. To register for the November event, please fill in the form below.
